I visited Four Corners in March, 1962. Access involved driving many miles on
a gravel road that paralleled the under-construction, now existent paved
road. The short side road to Four Corners was little more than two ruts across
the desert.
The spot was then marked by an approximately three-foot high truncated
pyramid made of concrete, and if my memory is correct, it was painted red. The
monument had suffered the ravages of weather and potshots and was not much to look
at. One could easily step on top for the classic photo. Visitation appeared
to be very low.
