the laos myanmar thailand tripoint lammth
at the confluence of the mekong & nam kok rivers
somewhere alongside the village of sob ruak thailand
http://www.tongkatali.org/thailandmaps/05.htm
has recently been designated by jesper as one of the 3
most popular & most photographed tripoints in the
world

& we have indeed seen a great many views of it from
time to time both here & at borderbase
the first & foremost among them arising from rolfs
dramatic personal visit
http://www.vasa.abo.fi/users/rpalmber/BordersGolden.htm
while others have come at it from such other angles as
http://members.aol.com/jaystach001/Pictures/V0411.jpg
http://zee-asia.com/images/golden%20triangle.jpg
http://zee-asia.com/images/golden%20triangle1.jpg
http://www.kelvinbaggs.com/tvl/asia/thailand/photos/golden_triangle_w.jpg

so there has long been a question
in view of the peculiar & expansive configuration of
the confluence & the confusing presence of islands in
its midst
where exactly does this tripoint position fall

indeed is it even in the river
or is it on an island

but a check of all the relevant ibs numbers 20 & 33 &
63
especially
http://www.law.fsu.edu/library/collection/LimitsinSeas/IBS020.pdf
quickly establishes that all the islands belong to
laos
& that the tripoint falls at the thalweg junction in
the channel to the right of the islands

thus
it is clear now that both of rolfs photos were already
a very creditable but distant class d
years before the existence of bp

& perhaps
a somewhat clearer or class c visit can now be claimed
for the first time here
http://www.christophwolf.de/so-asien/thailand/gd_GoldenTriangle.jpg
where the tripoint position is probably just visible
above the foliage in the foreground
about midway between the red roofed building & island
