so proceeding from message 14204
& despite the difficulty of the visual evaluation
we probably guessed correctly at norwich that the west fork or yantic river
is the tributary
& the east fork or shetucket river is the mainstream or true upper thames
insofar as this watershed schematic
http://www.mywatershed.com/all/sne/tha/qui12.htm
clearly shows how much larger an area the east fork drains than the west

the confluence at norwich btw is marked by the first red line tripoint above
new london

only a few miles up the shetucket the quinebaug river comes in from the east
opposite taft station
http://topozone.com/map.asp?lat=41.55528&lon=-72.05111

visually it might be easy enough to be misled here
both by the relative widths of the stream beds & their relative
directionalities

but on my first pass up the shetucket i was using my regular defective
delorme atlas
which actually misrepresented the lower shetucket as the quinebaug

so comically i was misled both by the map & by the world itself to aberrate
straight up the quinebaug
where i might have proceeded bissfully ever after in my ignorance of being
wrong
had i not subsequently become exceedingly confused & lost as well
in some far massachsetts headwaters of this branch

which was coincidentally exactly why & when & where i first began to call
out to you all for your help

& then once i showed you & saw with my own eyes the usgs topos correctly
identifying the shetucket
& the watershed map also indicating the upper shetucket beats the quinebaug
by areal comparison
i turned back up the shetucket & never slowed down til i reached its head at
willimantic
http://topozone.com/map.asp?lat=41.711&lon=-72.19
for here there is another difficult choice between the westbound left fork
aka willimantic river & the northbound right fork aka natchaug river

this confluence at willimantic btw is marked on the watershed map by the red
line tripoint northwest of the norwich tripoint previously identified

& it seems that both a visual comparison of the confluence & areal
comparison of the watersheds are inconclusive in this case

so here i will pause again both because i am again genuinely puzzled as to
the correct continuation & also to give anyone another chance to catch up
&or leapfrog ahead

& i know at least jack has already rescued me once before here on a
sawanabori of the shenandoah
so i still believe this may be the right place to get the needed help
