While it wasn't a stone, I can tell you about an American Indian boundary
monument.

In 1699, when Pierre le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville was exploring the lower
Mississippi River, he observed a red pole on a bluff on the east bank, with the
heads of fishes and bears sticking on it. He was told that the pole marked the
boundary agreed upon between the Houma and Bayougoula tribes. Iberville duly
noted the site on his map as "Baton Rouge" (red pole).
