if you are talking about massachusetts
there was indeed a huge atlas published for each county circa 1900
in which all the town lines & markers within that county are depicted &
described in great detail
& these are probably still available in most local libraries

the county marker you mention is not usual tho
& is indeed surprising to hear of

generally however
any dimple or crosshairs or similar symbol
graved in the center of the top face of a monument
whether on the rock itself or on an added disc
usually does mark the exact tripoint
assuming the stone is still perfectly vertical
