Until 1993, the 1996 CIA map of Bangladesh was
accurate. Boy, they are late in everything. And
people wonder why CIA incompetence is so many butt of
jokes.
Ok, now for the explanations. Until sometimes in the
'80s, the Bangladeshi orders of divisions were
Bibhags, Zilas, Mahkumas, Thanas, Unions and villages.
There are some in between these that is rarely
mentioned. In the '80s (not sure of exact year), the
Mahkumas became Zilas and Zilas informally became
anchals plus thanas became Upazillas in non-urban
areas. Before this change, there were twenty-one
zilas (now anchals), which is pretty accurately mapped
in the older map. The only difference is Ramgarh and
Rangamati is joined in Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Actually the map is accurate for its time. Originally
the Chittagong Hill Tracts were divided in three parts
as shown, but later the two northern ones joined back.
Now for the other two divisions. The Barisal and
Patuakhali districts in the old map became the Barisal
division and Sylhet district became the Sylhet
division. The tripoints would be BaChDh, BaDhKh
ChDhSy and DhKhRa. I don't think I am missing any,
but can't be sure. Due to the fact Bangladesh is very
wet, all tripoints are likely wet, but they are
river-wet, not in the sea.
