Hi,

Unfortunately, most British people won't have even heard of the Turks and
Caicos Islands, let alone know that it's a British Overseas Territory! I
think there is little tourism from the UK, although the islands have
started to advertise over here.

During the 1970s, various schemes were cooked-up by the UK government to
off-load the remaining overseas territories that were considered to be a
financial burden. This was not an uncommon scenario as it happened with
Newfoundland (to Canada), various Pacific Islands (to Australia and New
Zealand) and Anguilla (originally to St Kitts and Nevis, but subsequently
returning after a revolt *against* independence). However, this policy
changed after 1982, and the Turks and Caicos Islands were one of the
territories where the transition to independence was reversed.
