while awaiting the official new jersey computation of the total
length of the new njny state line on ellis island
i have been anticipating & preparing for a photo finish
between it & west kytn
based just on my previous rough measurement of 3 miles for
the latter & my much rougher sense that the 5 acre area
enclosed by the former might have a perimeter length of about 3
miles too

but a more careful measurement of west kytn using the best
available paper topos produced a length of 15899 feet
or very slightly over 3 miles

& a careful computation of west kytn performed by connecting the
best available geocoordinates of its presumptive terminal points
with a great circle arc came to 15787 feet
or very slightly under 3 miles

the difference of 112 feet between the measurement & the
computation amounts to about a millimeter & a half on the map
but because the termini fall at indefinite tripoints
such a discrepancy is entirely negligible
& even with the utmost care we probably cant get a better fix on
the true length of west kytn than to say it is very nearly if not
exactly 3 miles or 15840 feet

& a more careful mathematical analysis of the njny boundary on
ellis island reveals that the enclosed area of just under 5 acres
would have a minimum possible perimeter of about 1600 feet
if condensed into a circular or nearly circular shape
&
if formed as a regular convex polygon
its maximum perimeter would approach 2000 feet

& tho our irregular 180 sided polygon follows a fairly erratic path
& incorporates into itself many perimeter stretching concavities &
proruptions
it still seems doubtful that its full perambulation could rack up as
much as 3 miles

so at this point the njny ellis candidate remains perhaps a slight
favorite to underwhelm the west kytn candidate at the wire

but dont blink yet
