just spoke with larry thornton of njdep
who was partly responsible for picking up the 180 dots
from the low water line on the 1857 map
& he explained that they had actually numbered more than 180
points by the time the corrections claimed by new york were
added
& that neither the dots nor any of the other points have ever been
plotted on the ground on ellis island
nor the boundary marked in any way
nor is he aware of any plan to do so

so maybe we have no reason to go look see after all

moreover he is not even sure if the geocoordinates of the points
are recorded anywhere or even known
but passed me along to someone else i will hope to hear from
tomorrow

of course i am way over my head here as usual
& it now looks as tho i am going to need technical help to even
find not to say connect the dots
& then compute the total distance

but i am still hoping that that will yet be provided by njdep
whole or in pieces
without my needing to work anything out
