or some highlights anyway

first
& just to make 2 wrongs into a right
because we can
here is a serenade to jespers early suggestion & first ever nomination of a
mountain peak tripoint
in message 117
namely tp egypt libya sudan
which you may recall my poor atlas led me to call doubtful in message 150
& a good atlas even flatly disallowed in message 662
but well jesper it now seems you were right the first time about this mt
uweinat
for according to gideon its summit is in fact the tp
bravo

second
& just to extend further our celebration of peak tripoints
by giving more examples to search for pix of
gideon actually provides a worldwide list of them
the first assemblage of any kind of tri country points i have ever seen
anywhere
apart from our own tries
& this in itself is an extra cause to celebrate

so without further ado
except to note that china kyrgyzstan tajikistan is not among the peak tps
oops so much for the roof of the world
but happily it is the westernmost point of china
& that the book is full of stuff like this
our first known tri country point extremity
score about 20 tp peaks named as follows

afghanistan china pakistan
an unnamed peak or 2 to choose from

afghanistan china tajikistan
povalo shveykovski

afghanistan iran pakistan
kuh i malik siah

argentina bolivia chile
zapaleri

austria czech republic germany
plockenstein

austria italy slovenia
patzen peak on mt forno or petzen pec on mt ofen

austria italy switzerland
piz lad

austria liechtenstein switzerland
near but probably not precisely at naafkopf peak

bosnia croatia serbia
orijen

brazil guyana venezuela
roraima

bulgaria greece macedonia
tumba or beles or pole

china india nepal
jongsong

china kazakhstan russia
kuytun

egypt libya sudan
uweinat

el salvador guatemala honduras
montecristo

france italy switzerland
dolent

guinea ivory coast liberia
neun

iraq jordan saudi arabia
anaiza

israel lebanon syria
hermon

poland slovakia ukraine
kremenec

rwanda uganda zaire
sabinio

third
& just because it seems so outrageous in light of where we have been since
message 84
gideon says there is indeed a tp austria germany switzerland in the
southeastern section of lake constance 2 miles north of the swiss town of
alten rhein
& mapquest shows it there too i might add

this seems to correspond very well with the equidistant point or median
line junction point we were groping for in message 153

now whether gideon is reporting a fact here or simply taking matters into
his own hands
as i proposed we do for purposes of dropping a commemorative buoy
is anyones guess
but the caveat by martin in message 754 about eventual outcomes often
differing from assumptive maritime equidistant tripoints would seem to be
well taken here in lake constance as well

in any case the question remains
does gideon know something we & barry dont
or should we continue to rely on barry about that hole or triarea there

similarly
gideon says there is indeed also a tp belgium germany holland in the main
navigation channel or thalweg of the our river
& mentions no our river condominium between germany & luxemburg
nor any between germany & belgium
so he sees no triline or trijoint
as was also suggested by barry in message 293
but just an ordinary bedelu tp after all
as i believe peter sensibly favors also

these data & others mentioned below suggest to me that gideon may have
occasionally simplified matters in the interest of expediency
which i gather barry by contrast had no need or reason to do

for i still think barry may well be right & gideon therefore incorrect
about both of these atchde & bedelu situations
but perhaps barry or someone can source or clarify these matters further

fourth & really most exciting for me
apart from the above lingering uncertainties
gideon basically agrees with all our tri country point assumptions &
conclusions in message 597 right down to the western sahara & the de facto
tripoints on cyprus
except
he repeatedly asserts the existence of the botswana namibia zambia zimbabwe
quadripoint while scarcely whispering that it is actually in dispute

nor would i demur about this additional apparent simplification of his
since his encyclopedic authority could very well stand to advance the
maxipoint candidacy of this prospective bwnazmzw point that i too have so
fondly promoted

but since i have more recently seen on cspan tv the botswana ambassador to
the united nations say there is still a disagreement about whether his
country shares with zambia only a common point or a common boundary
i continue to think it best as well as most diplomatic to follow brownlie
in his uncertainty here also
& at least continue to allow for the probability of a short botswana zambia
boundary between 2 tripoints rather than a bwnazmzw quadripoint only

fifth
gideon gives no support for the 1375 french spanish boundary agreement &
monument reported recently here but holds the line there at no earlier than
1659
while he does claim andorras 1278 boundaries are the oldest extant in the
world

finally
the book is full of other goodies as brendan promised
like a list of named boundaries that includes red lines & green lines &
blue lines & even 1 violet line
plus many great maps & photos
& it will probably keep me gleaning additional tripoint data for some time
to come
which i will endeavor to assemble & report eventually
