I like the paragraph on your web site describing your difficulties
getting into Canada as a hitchhiker. I had a similar experience in
1973 in Buffalo, NY. Having hitchhiked from the Boston area on my
way to the west coast, I figured I would cross Ontario because
hitching was illegal in Pennsylvania and Ohio at the time. I got
dropped off at the entrance to the Peace Bridge and walked across in
a
crowd of people with inner tubes and other beach toys. They all got
through customs but I was turned away and given a form stating that I
was an undesirable alien. The real problem came when I got back to
US customs and they wouldn't let me in, saying I couldn't
hitchhike on the nearby highway (NY Thruway? I forget). They filled
out
another form and told me to go back to Canada, which I did. Of
course they did not let me in and so I trudged back to the US.
Meanwhile, the temperature never dropped below 100F. On
the way back to the US I stopped between the two flagpoles on the
bridge and
ate lunch, a man without a country. When I got to US customs I was
in for a continuation of the previous hassle until the changing of
the guard at 5pm. At that point a new customs officer asked me why I
was hanging around and I gave him my story. He said it was true that
I couldn't hitchhike on the nearby highway but he suggested I hold up
a sign. He gave me some materials to make one, I
wrote "Out of Here" and the second car picked me up and I was out of
there.
