Mats' pictures of the old enclave locations and the border itself got me thinking about this diagram that I've attached here. It shows in great detail the actual setup of the DDR-BRD border. The pillar in one of Mats' pictures near the trail might very well be one of the border columns described in visual number 3 on this diagram.
While this diagram is under public domain since it is from a government document, its source is the Bundesgrenzschutz, Bonn, 1980.
