the search for menhus if not also for mes & nhe has led me to ask the new
hampshire state library online reference department about the menh
interstate boundary redefinition & supreme court consent decree mentioned
in the previous message number 273 & for which i have such high hopes
because this wonderful new resource promises to answer any reasonable
question within a week
hahahaha

we shall see

& will this be soon enough to be of help with the present tries

in the meantime
mainly because i am so infatuated with the new topozone magic carpet toy
but also because the idea of 18 new major american tripoints is in itself
dizzying
i have decided to look for whatever other map evidence i can find of this
menhus point as well as of its 17 classmates
each supposedly situated where an interstate boundary line terminates 3
nautical miles offshore at the legal divide between state & federal
territorial waters

incidentally these tripoints are
proceeding down the east coast from menhus
manhus
marius
nyrius
njnyus
denjus
demdus
mdusva
ncusva
ncscus
gascus
flgaus
& then west along the gulf coast
alflus
almsus
lamsus
latxus
& finally up the west coast
caorus
oruswa

in http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.8981&lon=-70.7632&s=100&size=l
the position of manhus like that of menhus previously described is left
unclear

indeed i was surprised to find both of these missing tripoints on the same
quad map

they are in fact only a few miles apart wherever they are

& i wondered if perhaps just this one sorry quad hadnt been made on a
monday morning or something
while i told myself all the other 16 new tripoints might yet turn out to be
clearly depicted on their various quads
but i was not holding my breath at that point
since there were already these 2 big strikes against my theory & hope
& no real confirmations yet

for indeed the manh state line is shown here extending a bit less than 3
nautical miles offshore
oops
while the arc line has a radius of a bit more than 3 nautical miles
oops again
so there is again a slight gap & a curious disconnect or error instead of a
tripoint
tho in this case unlike that of menhus the tripoint position could at
least be extrapolated from the lines on the map
for whatever that might be worth

not much imho but not nothing either

moreover while failing to determine the positions of menhus & manhus
i was also beset here by a new enigma & a further complication
for in both the above map & its larger scale counterpart
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.8981&lon=-70.7632&size=l&s=50
the offshore projection of the manh interstate boundary runs about 2
degrees north of due east even tho an equidistant line perpendicular to the
coast would & should run about 2 degrees south of due east
& i havent a clue about the cause of this disturbing anomaly either
which could produce a 1300 foot displacement in the tripoint position along
the arc line

quite a mess & perhaps time to pack it in

but i am so glad i persisted because at marius things finally do get a
lot better

for in http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat41.452&lon=-71.0954&s=100&size=s
the mari interstate boundary line does indeed reach precisely as far as the
arc line
bravo
confirming at last that there may be some rhyme & reason to this bizarre
research exercise

an incredibly complicated & painstaking series of measurements & computations
inspiring little to no confidence actually
then finally yields an approximate geoposition for the marius point depicted
namely north lat 41d 13m 14s by west long 70d 52m 53s

a better guess could be made from the paper copy of the map
but the above estimated coords are at least a real beginning
& i think a real first taste of eventual complete success in this 18fold
undertaking
