Crown lands are those not in private hands, basically. They are held on
behalf of the crown by the govt. In austrlaia this is at state level mainly.
For example, all the large pastoral leases in the outback are crown lands
leased out to graziers. Various reserves and parks are also crown lands,
held back fomr alientation to private hands.
IN the US this probably equates to federal lands, but herei n Australai,
fecderal lands means stuff owned by the federal govt itsefl, like military
bases, quarantine stations, etc.
The central or even state govts can sell off crown lands, but i suspect the
process is different fomr selling real estate that is owned by the govt as
an institution. Ie the govt could buy land for a govt building off a private
owner, asnd then resell it as normal. But crown lands require alienation
first.

Thus crown lands does not mean federal land outside the states, but is
inside the states, or provinces in canada. Because each state/privince was a
separate colony before federation in each of our countries, so had its own
crown lands. As terra nullius, Austrlaia was all corwn land once claimed by
the UK. What is left is either of little value, ie outback, or reserves, ie
parks, coastal strips, etc.
