http://www.ca.blm.gov/cadastral/meridian.html
is a map of the entire united states public land survey system
showing all the various areas covered by it
& the initial points or points of origin
meaning the crossing points of the principal meridians & their base lines
for those areas that have them

on the map you can see the salt lake meridian & base line cross
where jack was just standing

also the 6th principal meridian & its base line cross
as commemorated by the quinti obelisk

also the original point of origin at ohpawv

etc

if you zoom in & look closely at the ute meridian area in western colorado
you may be able to recognize a still tiny but very distinctive shape at its
southeast end

to zoom in further
type in windy creek colorado at http://www.topozone.com
& you will see the cross of red lines in the lower right corner of the screen
diagonally separating the ute areas at nw & se from the 6th pm areas at ne
& sw

the peneclave here is the ute area to the southeast of the cross

note the horizontal line cleanly dividing unbroken ute townships 3south &
4south
& the vertical line cleanly dividing unbroken ute ranges 2east & 3east

by contrast the 6th pm townships & ranges are broken into oddments here

this cross appears to be the only one in the entire system
which comprises 37 generally large areas with initial points
plus 8 generally smaller ones without initial points

i cant figure out how it could ever have happened

it just sort of poked me in the eye this afternoon
