Dear All,

On Saturday I was unexpectedly left with half a day to spend in Brussels and
decided to spend it wisely, so I rented a car and drove up to Baarle. It was
my first time there, and was absolutely delighted. Unfortunately I came
ill-prepared as I had not anticipated the visit.

Nothing new to report at Baarle, I believe, although it seems that they are
quite prepared for people interested in the enclaves. A very friendly lady
in the Dutch tourist office gave me a map of the enclaves (not entirely
correct but sufficient). I bought two booklets that appear to be relatively
recent publications. One is called "Een onbegrensde grenzenwandeling door
Baarle" (a borderless boundary stroll through Baarle) and describes all
sites of Baarle, not focusing on the enclaves. The other one is called
"Baarle uniek en levendig enclavedorp" (Baarle, unique and lively enclave
town). This one focuses exclusively on the historical development and
current situation of the enclaves, and is very well researched and accurate.

I also tried to find the quadripoint, but lacking any navigational material
and only sporting the tourist map this was rather hopeless. So I was content
with looking at the field it is situated it.

Lacking a proper camera as well, I used my mobile phone camera. Attached is
a picture of a sign you see when entering the Belgian H17 enclave close to
Zondereygen (it's the enclave that was the bone of contention in the 1959
ICJ case "Certain Frontier Lands").

OK, sorry for rambling on, but you can see how fascinated and delighted I
was! I plan to return soon...

Cheerio,
Anton
