well the amphibious unit actually splashed down in a swamp on saturday in
south carolina
thus delaying our return home somewhat
but no matter
for here are the particulars on that still fairly fresh boundary marvel

but first
the above captioned pair of county names are the correct ones
with taylor playing the male part & schley the female
so please ignore the misidentification i made earlier

the topozone map & other data provided by arif in
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoundaryPoint/message/1510
served as a very reliable guide
& may also help you to see the details that follow

the crossing point itself is marked by the same sort of 4x4 inch concrete
post with raised center dimple just like bill found at laorospo
now looking like a standard surveyors supply item
but this one protruded a few inches above grade
& it was painted the same powder blue as the tree blazes leading to the
point from all 4 directions
tho the eastward approach we took from the road running alongside the
boundary a few hundred yards west of the point is likely the easiest & best

it appears that the half mile square clave may be almost entirely filled by
a pine plantation
which was also evident in neighboring parts of taylor county
but not in schley county
so it may be that the unusual intercounty boundary line followed this
original plantation property boundary both geographically & chronologically

the tree nearest the crossing point was inscribed in the same blue paint
with a tall letter x
which was sandwiched between horizontal lines like a roman numeral
& this seemed to symbolize the boundary cross
tho it may also have meant a 10 on a 10 scale for those with eyes to see it

in addition
this same symbol was also observed on a tree at the westerly road entrance
to the clave
so perhaps it serves to identify the entire clave as well as the point itself

a 4x4 marker similar to the one at the boundary cross but a foot taller
likewise accompanied this second painted x
& a third such marker standing at the nw corner of the clave was glimpsed
from the road alongside a line of trees

apart from these marks
none of the 3 road entrances to the clave announced the change of county
nor were any pavement or other changes evident anywhere
so apparently there must be some sort of cooperative maintenance
arrangement between the 2 counties
& this impression is strengthened by the only road sign at the only road
junction within the clave
which identifies it as schley county road 109
& this despite its location well within the taylor county clave

the visit was also considerably enhanced by a timely message from jack
pointing out a boundary penecross also in georgia at
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=17&n=3556636&e=316483&symshow=n

this one has the special virtue of just missing boundary crossdom
because it has a narrow neck rather than a true crossing point
& perhaps you will not find a narrower one anywhere

but it points up a crisis in nomenclature

for we have been using the words
peneenclave
peneexclave
peneclave
etc
by analogy with the word peninsula
meaning nearly an island

but it seems to me that only things of the sort that jack has found here
truly deserve this appellation
& i would offer the term penecross for this neck in his honor

by contrast
the boundary cross claves would probably be more truly named quasiclaves
or cruciclaves
or mobioclaves
or something else
you pick it
rather than pene anything
so at least the terms peneclaves & peninsulas will be in synch
along with any other pens or penes we might meet or create

for
the prevailing distortion
if it became more widespread
might lead someone to expect for example that all peninsulas at low tide
could easily become islands at high tide
etc etc

anyway it was & is a great chase
so score 1 for the group
& i will take a break before returning to the brooks & plains ge orgia
