Well, it finally happened! After months of discussion and planning,
glhemaokpa, the world's megapoint, a wetpoint conjuction of five
counties in Florida's Lake Okeechobee was finally marked by buoy by
Mike and Jane Donner and Bill Hanrahan on Feb. 3, 2001. The wetpoint
was found with the aid of two handheld GPS units, and marked with a
buoy specially marked for the occasion by Mike (see previous photo of
buoy in the files section). The trip started out - under
questionable skies - in a small skiff (Mike, you can supply Captain
Tom's full name) from Indiantown Marina and proceeded 10 miles
through the canal to the Indiantown Locks and then into Lake
Okeechobee (the second largest fresh water body wholly within the
boundaries of the United States, containing approximately 700 square
miles). From there, we proceeded another on an approximate 264 deg.
heading to the megapoint. Of course, the megapoint would not have
been complete without Mike jumping into the lake at this point! We
eventually arrived back in the marina three hours later, cold, hungry
and very wet...but also very satisfied that the glhemaokpa megapoint
had finally been marked. Future plans call for a low flyover next
year to see if the buoy is still in place! More commentary (and
photos) to follow from Mike and Bill...
