according to
http://home.earthlink.net/~dawise/Maine.htm
the oldest known extant caus monument dates from 1817
but it was a replacement for a 1798 original
which was itself the first monument on the caus line
or rather on what was then the gbus line

the position marked by these stones
at the source of the st croix river
or roughly halfway up the maine new brunswick boundary
is shown in
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=5087872&e594362&s=25&symshow=n
&
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=5087872&e594362&symshow=n

as can be seen there
the extant stone also marks the aroostook carlton york tricounty point
as well as the trimunicipal point formed by amity township & north lake &
richmond parishes
at a single multi distinguished position thus named
caus2menb3arcayo4amnori
tho the ibc calls it simply monument number 1

& no pix as it is a virgin

the first position marked on mxus
according to bus&ss
dates from around 1850
& is now occupied by monument 258
which you probably recall is the terminal rock overlooking the pacific at
tijuana imperial beach

but whether the present monument 258 incorporated the original or merely
replaced it isnt known
as the date of monument 258 itself isnt available
& it could easily be much later
judging from the pix we have seen of it

if so
then the oldest extant stone on mxus could be anywhere

but
also according to bus&ss
there are 6 other prime candidates from the same original bcca survey also
including especially the opposite bcca terminal rock
which is the one nearest azbcca & the mexican cable car tower on the
colorado river
& which struck me as being quite old
tho i neglected to photograph it

but checking the dates on these 2 terminal rocks alone might be sufficient
to settle the matter
without having to look for any of their 5 slightly younger survey mates
also possibly still standing somewhere in between
