lovers of the kentucky bend exclave
aka the bubble
may be interested to know there was once a comparable yet multiple
situation along the switchbacks of the canadian river in what is today
west central oklahoma
the 1988 national geographic historical atlas of the usa shows on page
122 an 1856 map of kansas & nebraska by morse & gaston
which indicates the indian territory was then subdivided into 3 parts
one of which
named muscogee & occupied by creeks & seminoles
is shown bounded on the south by the canadian river
& on the north by the 36th parallel
as was the case with ky bend
geographical knowledge of western ok was inadequate at that time for
any discontiguity to have been realized
& indeed the morse & gaston map shows no break in muscogee
but just a narrow westward proruption
& no major switchbacks in the river
thus the north & south bounds of muscogee are shown almost but not
quite convergent in the far west of the indian territory
however a glance at the modern map of ok shows the the canadian
river does bend northward of the 36th parallel 3 times & thus that 3
bubbles of this original muscogee entity actually did exist between
the 99th & 100th meridian
soon after the date of the map
muscogee was truncated & relieved of its westernmost lands
so the claves were not only unsuspected but evanescent besides
nevertheless you can still see them pop out at you on any decent map
between the canadian river & the 36th parallel
look for the easterly one in dewey county & the westerly 2 in ellis
the westernmost one is also bounded by the texas panhandle on the west
all that is left of old muscogee is now muskogee county ok
still clinging to the canadian but no longer anywhere near the 36th
parallel
& indeed now far to the east of its former bubbles
