It appears that whoever wrote that story, just doesn't know what
they're talking about. I'll just correct it for them:

"A small village on the border between East and West Sussex has
broken away from Britain and declared its independence."

A small village in the county of Sussex, but on the border between
administrative East Sussex and West Sussex has broken away from
Britain and declared its independence.

"East Grinstead now calls itself the People's Republic of Ashurst
Wood Nation State (PRAWNS)."

Ashurst Wood now calls itself the People's Republic of Ashurst Wood
Nation State (PRAWNS).

[East Grinstead is a big town, not a small village, and is some miles
away and has nothing to do with Ashurst Wood - apart from being
the 'post-town']

I've not heard of Ashurst Wood (aka Ashurstwood) being
an 'independent state'. No doubt it was just a publicity stunt for
the 'millennium' (the article -is- 3 years old!). I've only lived in
Sussex (for university) since mid-2001, and I've not heard anything
about it.

I can understand their despair though.... 77% of their council tax
goes to West Sussex County Council which is based in Chichester (52
miles away by car and that takes 1hr 10mins according to the AA Route
Planner). I doubt that people in Chichester have even heard of
Ashurst Wood.

The second tier, Mid Sussex District Council, gets 11% and is based
in Haywards Heath (17 miles by car; 25 minutes)

The third tier, their very own Ashurst Wood Parish Council (based of
course in the village), gets a measly 4%.
