A USSR border marker is basically the same, only the colours are red
and green, and bears the coat-of-arms of the Soviet Union. The russian
border marker has the same colours, but of course the coat-of-arms of
Russia. So I think that lots of Ukrainian markers where just painted
over and had the Soviet coat-of-arms removed (and replaced with the
Ukrainian one).
Some illustrations (not very good ones) that I could find:

Maybe someone else has a really good picture of a Russian marker.

For those who read Russian: a description of a border marker can be
found in the boundary treaty between the Soviet Union and North Korea
at http://asiatimes.narod.ru/docum/nkorea/gg1.htm (Part 1, par. 2,
section 2). Interesting here is also that a "boundary marker"
(pogranicnyj znak; caron on c) is defined as to consist of two
"boundary posts" (pogranicnyj stolb; caron on c), one of each country,
bearing the same number. Now this is nothing strange for a river
boundary (as is the case here), but this is also done for land
boundaries. I wonder what the normal distance is between the two parts
of the marker.
