Brendan --

Where did you see the original story on Zero Ave?  I've been trying to find it without much luck.  I did find this at the MSNBC site:  http://www.msnbc.com/local/wtmj/j26656.asp

As to your questions...

Zero Ave. runs from just east of the Peach Arch Park (Peace Arch Park Drive) and the main crossing (I-5/Hwy 99) along the border to the next crossing (The "Truck Crossing") at 176th Street (Surrey, BC).  It then swings around the border crossing -- this is where you have to cross 176th (HWY 15) and get on to 176A -- then back on Zero (the picture with the dead end).  From there, it continues east for quite a stretch.  Then there is a break in Langley, BC (224th St) -- then it continues again until it hits BC HWY 13 which is the Aldergrove border crossing.  Its name changes to Boundary road and it continues east until south of Abbotsford BC where two lakes (Laxton Lake, Judson Lake) force it to end at Townline Road.  There is more of Boundary Road east of the Huntington BC - Sumas WA border crossing, but on the map it appears to be a distance from the actual border.

There are many way to get to Zero Ave by car. Heading towards a border crossing will take you there, though only from Canada.  There are no official street to street connections.  Only roads from Canada touch Zero.  The American road only loops alongside Zero.

The border is incredibly open.  Especially further east of the truck crossing.  It is just like an open field.  Of course, with the three new video camera installations,  it appears much more open than it probably is.  I'm sure there are all kinds of detection devices in use.  The cameras may even be heat seeking.  I didn't see any of the National Guard troops that are stationed along the border.  Just the one snoozing Border Patrol agent.

Being down there again made me realize how interesting this border is.  And it's so close!

Cheers,

Doug

Again, fantastic pics!  I was kinda doubtful that 0 Ave. was the same street I was on when you first replied to my post, but after seeing the very last picture I recognized the part near the very end as the place I mentioned in my message.
A few questions...
How far does 0 Avenue go?  How do you get there by car?  Are there any street-to-street connections between the US and Canada off of this road?  It seemed like in all your pictures the answer was no, but you were actually there, not me!  I have followed this road on TerraServer before so it's great to see these pics.  Still pleasantly surprised how much of this border is open; anyone could just walk across the street and be in the other country.

Thanks for the treat!  ;)

Doug,

GREAT pics!  Could you send them to me?  I have DSL.  :)

Thanks!

Because of all this discussion of Zero Avenue, I decided to take a drive down there today.  I snapped a ton of pictures and paid more attention to the road itself.  I noticed two things that I had not seen before -- a border patrol agent sitting in his car and watching a portion of this stretch of border.  He was parked on Boundary Road -- I was on Zero Avenue, running parallel.  I also noticed at least three new camera installations on the US side.
If you have broadband, I can send them all to you.  I will post some either on my website or here.  If I post them here, I'll shrink 'em.
This was also the first time I felt like I was being watched and might actually get in trouble.  I'm sure my licence plates have been recorded!
A couple of teases attached.  One:  the Zero Ave. sign.  Two:  parallel roads -- note speeds in KM and MPH!

Thanks Doug...I thought you'd be the ultimate source on this one!  To say that I'm intrigued buy this road is an understatement...I certainly hope to drive it some day.

The road in question is most likely "Zero Avenue."  It is the road that runs along the northern side of the border from roughly White Rock, BC (Peace Arch Park) to a points east, almost to the Huntington-Sumas Crossing.  Around the Aldergrove crossing, there is an American road that parallels the border as well.  This is only for a short distance, but it is interesting.  KM signs in Canada, miles in America.  I have a snap somewhere, and will attempt to find.  I'm unsure of the name of the American road.
Until then, here's a link to a picture of Zero Avenue.    http://mypage.direct.ca/l/lyadams/adams8.htm
