Agents Find Tunnel Under U.S.-Mexico Border; Say It Was Used to Smuggle Drugs, Immigrants
The Associated Press
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities have discovered a tunnel running under the U.S.-Mexico border that apparently was used to smuggle drugs and illegal immigrants, the Drug Enforcement Administration announced Wednesday.
The tunnel was discovered in the mountains east of San Diego, known as a busy corridor for illegal immigration and drug smuggling. U.S. authorities blocked the tunnel Wednesday and were working with Mexican officials to do the same on their end.
The exact location of the tunnel was not immediately released. DEA Special Agent Steve Lough said it was fairly sophisticated but declined to give further details.
In 1993, agents discovered a tunnel 65 feet underground between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego that was lined with cement and equipped with electricity. Other tunnels have been found in Arizona.
