No, there are people living there. E.g. on Kerguelen, in
the "capital" Port-aux-Français. From the Book "Kerguelen" by J.-P.
Kauffmann:

"(...) Together we walk to the "Postal Service". (...) Why would
there be a post office in an area where the post is delivered on only
a few days per year? Because there you can buy the special TAAF
stamps. These stamps are enormously popular with philatelists, who
know all islands of Kerguelen and dream of becoming the owner of
a "Résidence de France", a very rare post cover from the time of the
Bossière brothers. Everyone that stays here during winter has the
right to send a telegram of seventy words each week to someone.
The postal service is the only place in the archipelago where you
reach for your wallet. At the co-operation you can buy everything
(alcohol, sigarettes, clothing, shoes) without having to pay with
cash or even write a cheque. The things you buy are subtracted from
your salary at the end of your stay. (...)"

Has someone already seen TAAF stamps with euro denominations?
