Len,
I am close to being an expert on the subject of
Colon and I have already wrote a few previous e-mails
on the subject to the list. I am aware of the
original treaty not having any provisions for Colon.
I have read up on Colon, but I have to look through
all the information and I am too lazy to look through
the mess I generaly tend to make, so here is the basic
idea.
To start with, Colon needed to be a Panamanian
City and after a certain time, USA handed over the
city to Panama. However, Fort Lesseps, later to
become the American consulate, remained American, an
enclave within Colon. Punta Patilia, a place east of
Panama City, was also a coastal fragment of America.
I have paper maps of these, but have not found any on
the internet. I am not sure whether the two
above-mentioned oddity remained or not, but in 1950, a
corridor to Colon was handed over to Panama. Colon
still remained an enclave as the corridor was not
complete. It was almost complete except for Randolph
Road a piece of America, which divided the corridor.
Maps for these info could be found in the two
sites http://www.americahurrah.com/CZmap/MapIndex.htm
and http://www.scottreid.com/parthome.htm . I am
adding the maps though color information is lost.
