Ramadan will begin on Friday or Saturday so I wanted to wish our
Muslim colleges a good Ramadan.

To make this relate to the general topic, I was wondering what
provisions were made for Muslims living in the extreme North or South
as the time to fast in Ramadan (and prayer calls at all times of the
year) are based on the position of the sun. For example if a Muslim
lived in Stockholm Sweden, sunrise is at 7:39 and sunset is at 3:24.
While in Perth Australia, sunrise is at 5:10 and sunset is 6:53. If
you were on the South or North Poles I guess you would be really out
of luck as the sun either never rises or never sets.

When I was in Saudi Arabia a similar set of questions arose when a
Saudi Prince flew in the Space Shuttle. What time should he pray (The
Shuttles sees a sunrise every 90 minutes) and what direction should
he pray in. The anwsers were to pray on Mecca time and that the
direction did not matter as he was closer to paridise (Heaven) than
anyone else at the time. I had the opportunity to meet him after his
mission.
