 </span></blockquote>English churches used to have an annual &#39;beating the bounds&#39; procession <br/>
where the vicar and wardens would lead the (male) choristers and others <br/>
around the parish boundary and they would beat the boundary marks with <br/>
switches to help them remember where it was.<br/>
