At some places along the Berlin wall, the wall didn't stand very
close to the actual border. The most famous example is of course the
Lenné Triangle, where West Berlin authorities were forced to do
nothing about the camp of "Autonomen" (i.e. squatters and
anarchists), until the Triangle was transferred to West Berlin
following the area swaps of 1988 (and lots of these Autonomen
consequently fled to... the east).

But another such case was the small triangular piece of land that can
be seen on one of the three border guard maps (see
http://www.dailysoft.com/berlinwall/maps/berlinkarten_06.htm ). It
was on this little piece of land, just north of St. Thomas church,
that the Turkish inhabitant of Kreuzberg district Osman Kalin started
his little vegetable garden. You can read all about him and his
garden (apparently still there!) at http://www.berliner-
mieterverein.de/mietermagazin/andere/4-01/s21.htm .
