all we knew for sure about the 5 south african
tricountry points
namely bwnaza bwzazw mzzazw mzszzan & mzszzas
respectively
reading eastward & then southward across the above map
was encapsulated here
http://home.worldonline.dk/jesniel/border/african_tripoints.htm#bwnaza
& here
http://home.worldonline.dk/jesniel/border/african_tripoints.htm#bwzazw
& here
http://home.worldonline.dk/jesniel/border/african_tripoints.htm#mzzaszn
about 6 years ago

& tho we can now improve on the geocoords given there
& can flash a few neighborhood pix
the state of play has scarcely advanced on any of
these points since then

for example
or rather at the very best

mzszzan

with thanx in large part to borderbase

&
the major internal tripoints of south africa
or the za2 class
are all terra even more incognita
but at least they too can be found & named in iso &
presumably rounded up as follows
ecncfs
ecncwc
fsgtmp
fsgtnw
fsmpnl
fsncnw
gtlpmp
gtlpnw

for the codes
http://statoids.com/uza.html

&
binational tripoints are of course formed with all 6
neighboring countries
also all virgin
but interestingly only 1 of these is formed with
namibia
so it is probably worth distinguishing here as
naza2hakanc
aka hardap & karas regions of namibia with northern
cape province
& only 1 other of them is formed with zimbabwe
namely zazw2lpmsmv
or masvingo & matabeleland south provinces of zw with
limpopo of za
but
there are no fewer than 6 with botswana
produced by 2 za provincial border junctions & 4 na
district border junctions
& 2 with mozambique
one produced by a za & the other by a mz
interprovincial boundary
& 5 with swaziland
of which 4 are with sz interdistrict borders
& fully 13 with lesotho
yikes
of which 10 are with ls interdistrict borders & 3 with
za interprovincial ones

so evidently that makes a total of 41 international &
domestic za1 & za2 tripoints of all types combined

but most intriguingly
2 of the 3 lsza secondary tripoints that are formed by
the south african interprovincial borders appear to
stand some chance of meeting up with lesotho
interdistrict borders & thus of producing binational
quadrisecondary points with them of the sort that was
discovered for the first time only yesterday in
scandinavia & thought to be unique in the world
until today

to see this possibility compare the map at the top
with this one
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lesotho.geohive.gif
at the points where the orange & tugela rivers cross
the lsza border

of course everything depends on whether the legal
definitions match up exactly
which they most probably dont
as what crude mapping we do have already even suggests

this might have reduced the full inventory of major za
multipoints from 41 to 40 or even 39
& i was excited to think nose2janontvb might have had
some real company here for a while
but pending better mapping
i no longer imagine so
& janontvb still very probably remains a global
singularity
for the time being
