hapiri
or the hancock pittsfield richmond tripoint
http://www.berkshireweb.com/themap/index.html
which you may recall was the unexpected wetpoint &
potential spoiler of an otherwise perfect collection
because she alone of all 44 tripoints in the county
turned up unmarked on the usgs topo
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4697582&e=636672&s=24&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
was found in the border bible today described as fully
marked
yesss
by a stone monument sunk in the mud in the bottom of a
small pond
with a 1 & a half inch iron pipe for a finder standing
beside the bound
which shows above the surface of the water except at
its highest stage
situated near the easterly end of the pond 95 feet
west of the dam
etc

& so she is not at all the spoiler i was preparing to
believe she was

which means the desired perfection is still
theoretically attainable in the berkshires
with the help of a gps receiver to be sure
for the already at least 6 tough nuts that have been
identified
& now add to that a snorkel mask
for the at least 1 or 2 underwater tough nuts

for indeed i have subsequently also scoured both the
northern & the southern testaments to find that all 44
of my berkshire tripoint targets were marked in some
way as of 1915
just as i had originally merely presumed they were
but can now at last positively confirm

so as of 90 years ago anyway
tripointing perfection was still theoretically
attainable in the berkshires

42 of the 44 tripoints were marked with rocks of some
sort
i have now ascertained
& the remaining 2 with other hardware

but in theory all were & are still equally &
absolutely visitable

& in reading the above marvelous description of hapiri
& studying the accompanying schematic
i tried to recall if i had even noticed such a pipe on
my first visit to the site last sunday
but could only settle the matter by returning to the
scene again today to scope it out afresh with benefit
of the new data

& indeed the pond was running over the dam today
which means it was in fact at its highest stage
so the pipe was indeed either submerged or had
disappeared in the intervening years
& no further progress could be made on it today in any
case

for indeed
even above & beyond the unfavorability of the water
level
the various data i now have stand in striking mutual
contradiction

for tho the bible text says the tripoint is 95 feet
west of the dam
the bible diagram shows it 150 feet above the dam &
100 feet offshore

& the usgs topo shows the tripoint at or certainly
very near the edge of the pond 158 feet from the dam

but being unable to either reconcile all these
conflicting data
or to see the finder or the monument itself in the
water
i nevertheless tried to strike a rough average among
all the data
& made the attached revised guess photo
in which the notional tripoint is centered in the
foreground
perhaps just at the horizontal break in the scum line

compare the topo to the aerial pic
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=11&Z=18&X=1591&Y=11743&W=1

in any case
the new pic represents a distinct improvement over the
previous one
& an upgrade from a class d to a class c visit now
i would guess
but clearly the gps & snorkel gear as well as a much
lower water stage will be needed for the eventual
upgrade here
to the perfection of class a

so i resolved to return again during the next dry
spell
& otherwise to postpone this retry for last of all
after all 43 other companion tripoints have been
completed

from hapiri i proceeded to resume an earler try for
nearby lnpiri also
http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4696909&e=640264&s=25&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
just to try to regain some momentum & also to test out
my new legs

this is how it went

i parked where the gas pipeline crosses the dead end
approach
aka knox road
& rather than invading a lot of private property
i followed the clearcut of the gas line as far as what
i took to be piri
because it was at the margin of cleared & forested
land
or in other words just as the above topo shows it

compare the much more recent aerial pic here too
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=11&Z=18&X=1600&Y=11742&W=1

& i was next able to get a pretty good fix on the
point where piri crosses a brook still about 360 yards
west of lnpiri
& picked up a very promising yellow blazed lead line
there
which however quit & turned much too soon
at a private survey marker

i continued my pace count on the same bearing tho
& eventually reached & scoured what i took to be the
target area
albeit without success

so this tripoint too has already attained its tough
nuthood
becoming the 7th in that class

& i have also found that my foot still needs a little
more recreation
so i will proceed to celebrate a somewhat longer
hiatus at this point
as i contemplate the return to potential perfection
for awhile longer too
with the score very conveniently holding at
one full 18 hole golf course down
& half of another tried
but still up in the air

the unexpected assimilation with golf seems especially
felicitous here

pointing tries are after all much like playing
gigantic golf holes

play will resume
when it does
on the 2 suspended tries for dapiwa & lnpiwa
& will then proceed with the 17 remaining as yet
untried points
before returning to the collected 7 or more tough nuts
