while scarcely able to wait for my personally
designated return date with october mountain this
sunday
i of course couldnt help wondering in the meantime how
this mountain ever came to receive such a distinctive
name

& indeed just discovered today
in the fullness of traipsing thru 5 libraries & the
internet
that tho this mountain wasnt officially named til 1915
the name itself was made up by herman freakin melville
in the 1850s
just like moby dick
which he also penned at his nearby home
pointedly named arrow head
while in thrall of this mountain & its loftier
companion mt greylock

in fact the name october mountain appears in at least
2 of melvilles published writings
before it is met with anywhere else

one of these is entitled october mountain
& was published in melvilles name
tho there is some doubt that he really wrote it

& it is seemingly impossible to find in print besides

but no matter
for in another story
entitled cock a doodle doo
which is of unquestioned authenticity
melville even describes the general vicinity of the
tripoint
in such a way that it was still recognizable by me
today
a century & a half later

& in this fictional narrative that culminates with a
cock crow upon the mountain itself
he reveals that it is expressly named october mountain
on account of its bannered aspect in that month

now it is stunning enough to find that a mountain so
endued with creaturehood & intrigue as this one is
is actually a literary littermate of moby dicks

but i am most impressed to also notice at the same
time
as i prepare to resume the lelnwa try by cosmic
prescription on the 1st of the new month
that i have encountered appreciable resistance only on
the 1st & 11th points in this entire sequence
& that they are both situated
oddly enough
upon massifs & within towns all named for the 1st
president
