according to my cheap encyclopedia there were 2 tordesillas lines
both of them explicitly bipolar circles


that of the 1493 papal bull set the line 100 leagues west of the cape verde
islands

ironically in australia the complementary line of longitude corresponds
roughly to the great dividing range


that of the 1494 treaty revised it to 370 leagues west of the cape verde
islands

fittingly in this case too
it appears to make a direct hit on the western australia boundary line

must have had something to do with the doctrine of papal infallibility
