Subject: several truly great sussex red herrings<br/>

not all 8 vertices of the sussex octagon were probably<br/>
& are now certainly unmonumented in any demonstrative<br/>
or leading way <br/>
if indeed not entirely unmarked in any way ever<br/>
i was sufficiently gulled & excited by the appearance<br/>
of at least 2 candidate objects to proceed to<br/>
photograph each of them in turn<br/>

the first attachment shows an object i initially<br/>
thought was a large wine cork puller that might have<br/>
been adapted to the task of demarcation by a<br/>
resourceful surveyor <br/>
but which now seems to resemble more a truck hand<br/>
brake<br/>
 <br/>
but in any case it is stuck quite firmly in the ground<br/>
for some reason<br/>
in what i took to be approximately the right place<br/>
without any obvious rival candidate in sight<br/>
<br/>
& i actually carried this hope off with me to a second<br/>
vertex<br/>
which however was found not to be similarly marked<br/>
oops<br/>

<br/>
& the second pic shows a decorative planter sculpted<br/>
from an old tire<br/>
positioned directly beneath a welcome sign<br/>
at what i took to be another approximately right place<br/>
<br/>
& for which i also initially entertained a similar<br/>
hope that was however simultaneously dashed when no<br/>
trace of a matchmate could be found for it either <br/>
at any of the other vertices<br/>

& later <br/>
in downtown sussex<br/>
just before jc discovered the most probable center<br/>
point <br/>
or what might be called the center apparent for the<br/>
time being <br/>
namely that of the octagonal gazebo<br/>
i was also sufficiently gulled & excited by the<br/>
appearance of a whole cluster of other candidate<br/>
objects just across the street from the gazebo to<br/>
photograph them first<br/>
thus creating the third attachment<br/>
which includes the following several probably losing<br/>
candidates for center point<br/>

1<br/>
the ball mounted on top of the polished marble column<br/>
coincidentally erected & inscribed 1902 <br/>
the correct year of the incorporation & border<br/>
creation<br/>

2<br/>
the point of issue of the now defunct gift fountain it<br/>
commemorates<br/>
<br/>
3<br/>
the kettle or birdbath in front of the column & fount<br/>
<br/>
4<br/>
the flagpole rising in the foreground<br/>
<br/>
& 5<br/>
the center of a rosette of octagonal paving stones on<br/>
the curb<br/>
not very distinctly visible in the foreground<br/>
& which i only just noticed in this photo appears to<br/>
be a matchmate for the 10 other rosettes that are<br/>
ranged about the gazebo across the street  <br/>
& which i have previously described<br/>

of course<br/>
unlike the cork puller & the tire planter<br/>
these latter 5 candidate objects cant yet be entirely<br/>
ruled out<br/>
any more than the gazebo apex can be proclaimed the<br/>
certain center<br/>
without further research<br/>
<br/>
indeed <br/>
since we know there is about a 6 percent fudge factor<br/>
in the several thousand feet of geometric projections<br/>
in all directions<br/>
it is quite possible that no clear mathematical winner<br/>
might stand out from among the gazebo apex & all 5 of<br/>
its near rivals<br/>
on the basis of measurements alone<br/>
& that only further historical evidence will suffice<br/>
to nail the center point with certainty  <br/>
