determining the worlds largest peninsula<br/>
<br/>
for starters<br/>
the coords of the termini of its isthmus<br/>
also evidently the worlds largest of its kind<br/>
have been carefully noted <br/>
to the best of my limited ability <br/>
specifically<br/>
nlat 63d40m x elong 37d48m<br/>
on onega gulf of the white sea<br/>
&<br/>
nlat 30d30m x elong 48d54m<br/>
on an iranian inlet of the persian gulf<br/>
<br/>
but that is accurately enough for a much improved<br/>
trial balance to be based upon & to proceed from<br/>
if only i could figure out how to superimpose an image<br/>
of the great circle arc that would join these terminal<br/>
points <br/>
onto an outline map of the countries it would cross<br/>
particularly russia & azerbaijan & iran <br/>
all accurately enough to permit reasonably good<br/>
estimates of the proportions of the territorial areas<br/>
of those countries that would fall to either side of<br/>
the isthmus<br/>

but can anyone help with that or toward that<br/>
<br/>
& it probably wouldnt even have to be extremely<br/>
terribly accurate for the trial to be successful<br/>
either<br/>
since <br/>
again <br/>
the margin of imbalance isnt very likely to be so<br/>
razor thin that it would matter<br/>
<br/>
indeed our remaining without a sure winner at this<br/>
late hour hasnt been due so much to any precision gap<br/>
as it has been to an understanding gap <br/>
til recently anyway<br/>
& as it is due now to a technique gap<br/>
<br/>
for the moment<br/>
<br/>
but i think the puzzle is very solvable in due time<br/>
<br/>
<br/>

um<br/>
& being temporarily stumped in the original direction<br/>
i did at least take some substitute gratification in<br/>
determining the length of the worlds longest isthmus<br/>
since i could<br/>
<br/>
3768 kilometers<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
um<br/>
& it has also occurred to me that another good name<br/>
for the winning peninsula <br/>
whichever lobe it is<br/>
might be <br/>
daedalus 9<br/>
as in the surreal line score of the event<br/>
daedalus nine<br/>
peninsula dead<br/>

hmm<br/>
maybe i could get the guinness people to help me out<br/>
with this trial balance demonstration<br/>
since they will need it to be satisfied themselves in<br/>
the end<br/>
<br/>
& they might take an active interest in such a<br/>
definitive winner once they realize one can be had<br/>
<br/>
but i guess the trick will be in convincing them that<br/>
such a monster of a winner would still be a peninsula<br/>
<br/>
it does boggle the mind a bit<br/>
