Call for papers.

As part of the 2005 Royal Geographical Society and Institute of British Geographers Annual Conference "Flows and spaces in a globalised world" to be held in London 31 August - 2nd September 2005, this message is to announce a call for papers for the session:

'Borders, boundaries and frontiers: concepts and landscapes'

As the interface between states, the concepts of borders, boundaries and frontiers continue to be integral to understanding global flows. But how much do we understand about the nuances between the concepts? The ambiguity of the terms means that they can sometimes be interpreted so broadly that they become ineffectual. Those who relate borders, boundaries and frontiers to the territorial or physical landscape often have different interpretations of the terms to those who relate them to the human landscape. So are we using these terms and understanding the concepts of borders, boundaries and frontiers consistently? Should the concepts be more exclusive to landscapes, or are there commonalities which bind them? Papers in this session should address the concepts of boundaries, borders and frontiers in the physical and human landscape through specific case studies.

This session will be chaired by Professor David Campbell (University of Durham) and has been sponsored by the Political Geography Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).

Those interested in submitting abstracts for this session should contact John Donaldson (j.w.donaldson@...) by 15th January.

The deadline for abstract submissions to the RGS is January 31, 2005.
