Ok, attached is a 1:60000 topo map of the Drummully enclave area (sorry about spelling errors). The border is marked the same on the three spots we stopped at on the Republic pene-enclave. The border is marked with small square pewter plates planted in the pavement.

1)       Photo 12s is taken at point L37C on the topo map, looking from NI into the exclave (west). The car is in the enclave. Notice the three silvery squares in the road.

2)       Photo 13s is taken at point L37B on the topo map, looking from the enclave back into the small piece of NI between the two points. The car is in NI, but I’m in the Republic. At this spot there are four small plates in the road.

3)       Photo 15s is taken at point L36 on the topo map. My friend, Alan, and those houses are in NI, but I’m standing in the Republic enclave.

4)       Photo 16s is taken at point L36, facing northeast. You can see the border marker in the road and a fence going through the pastures.

We wanted to cross into the enclave at point L35(C), but there was road construction just east of the border in NI, which wouldn’t allow us to pass. We didn’t have time to try any of the other border points, and our driver was really nervous about driving along the backwoods in the border area. L 37A is a simple dirt tractor track. L37 is a tiny bridge over a very small stream.

You’ve probably all seen it, but I didn’t realize it until I studied the map in preparation for the trip—there are two pene-enclaves in the Drummully region.

1)       The whole of the big Republican enclave (Clonoony) is accessible only through NI. It’s cut off at a narrow neck by the Finn River.

2)       If you look at crossings L31A, L31B and L31, you can also see that there is a pene-exclave northwest of the Finn River. It is a UK pene-exclave and can only be accessed by car through the Clonoony (Ireland) exclave. Sorry if this is old news. I was disappointed not to have more time to explore the area.

Cheers,
Dallen
