with the benefit of further reflection
the superiority of sawmill brook over its unnamed rival at state line pond
by a margin estimated yesterday at 22 percent
still feels like a safe presumption
because the shed areas involve several square miles of territory
which is more than enough to compensate for any errors of detail &or other
local anomalies

but the superiority of upper sawmill brook over its other & much lesser
unnamed rival
at its top fork just below cedar swamp
by an even larger margin
indeed estimated yesterday at 28 percent
really cannot be accepted without personal inspection & verification of the
actual confluence
because the shed areas in this case involve only a few acres of territory
& even small errors &or anomalies could suffice to reverse the decision

moreover it cant be ignored that the unnamed drainage is shown on the topo
as an intermittent stream
whereas the outflow of cedar swamp at the head of sawmill brook is shown as
continuous
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.0535&lon=-72.2911

thus even if yesterdays estimated shed comparison is essentially correct in
a downpour
it could still be that cedar swamp is fed by perennial springs
making it the sawanabori choice during the remaining 99 point 99 percent of
the time

but clearly this fork needs to be checked before proceeding

& even tho the fork area looked hard to reach from the bridge on ayers road
just below it
owing to the thick undergrowth there
it might still be reachable from the jeep track crossing
shown here just below the swamp outlet & just above the fork
or else perhaps from cedar swamp road at the foot of peck hill just to the
west of the fork

either way it looks like less than 1000 feet of bushwhacking

& on my anticipated return to the scene later today
i will try to reach this confluence by either of these routes
& settle the matter with my own eyes

thunderstorms are predicted
