all the state line pond watershed maps were finally printed & carefully
penciled up this morning
to within an acceptable margin of error
provided the difference between the competing sheds is not too close

& after all the map swatches were fitted together carefully
& the irregularly shaped watershed areas measured & compared
the sawmill brook watershed proved to be about 22 percent larger than that
of the unnamed brook

& this seemed a sufficiently decisive margin of superiority
even allowing for a possibly irregular distribution of rainfall & springs
so i was content to leapfrog directly up sawmill brook without ever having
actually seen its mouth

the similar but much smaller dilemma arising at the highest fork on sawmill
brook
at a point situated just below cedar swamp
which has also been both previously assessed & not yet seen
was similarly dispatched & confirmed by careful measurement
in favor of the moulton hill drainage rather than the one from cedar swamp
itself
by an even greater margin
of 28 percent

the fact that both of these confirmations were of continuations previously
guessed speaks well for my intuition if not for my confidence in it
but in this game there is no substitute for certainty
so i am still glad i slowed down to check
especially since i dont think i can proceed to locate the headspring til the
fall of the year anyway

the summit of moulton hill is another matter & probably a much easier
culmination to achieve
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=42.04778&lon=-72.28528
& i will try it directly on my next free ride to the neighborhood
which could occur as early as this weekend

i was impressed to find the online japanese shower climbers doing a similar
leapfrog maneuver
by jumping right over their stream source too & directly to its overhanging
summit point
so perhaps i am on good authority in taking this decision
tho frankly i did intend to actually find & drink from the headspring itself
if any
as i have previously done with the housatonic & potomac & shenandoah
& as i have earnestly tried but not yet succeeded on many others
since a wet culmination is direct payment in kind
& a bigger thrill & reward than just climbing on up to the dry ridge above

but there is definitely still somewhere to go here either way
