It is commonly termed "meteorological summer" or
winter, spring, autumn.
http://www.colby.edu/sts/st215/3.2view/sld005.htm
Aussies use these meteorological conventions as well
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/askjack/2003-12-21-answers-seasons_x.htm
Irish calendar uses May, June, July as summer!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_calendar
But these are all based on convention, politics,
tradition, weather people who miss on their forecasts
by 20 degrees, etc...perhaps there are even more
variations yet to be brought up here! Barring any
cataclysmic changes to the earth's orbit, the natural
constants will always hold; and how could we trump
mother earth with our own conventions (but just look
at a map - havent we done that anyway already???)
