Here in NJ it has always been "traffic circle." NJ pioneered the mass use of
the circle, I believe starting in the 1920's, as an efficient and safe way to
move traffic through an intersection without having to stop at a light or
cross at a right angle. As traffic got heavier and heavier, those circles became
nightmares of traffic jams and fender benders. In recent years, NJ has been
removing the worst circles and replacing them with simple intersections
controlled by a traffic light!

BTW, on a recent trip to South Africa, I was amused by their name for traffic
lights.
