<div id="ygrps-yiv-1219507332">Here in NJ it has always been &quot;traffic circle.&quot;  NJ pioneered the mass use of <br/>
the circle, I believe starting in the 1920&#39;s, as an efficient and safe way to <br/>
move traffic through an intersection without having to stop at a light or <br/>
cross at a right angle.  As traffic got heavier and heavier, those circles became <br/>
nightmares of traffic jams and fender benders.  In recent years, NJ has been <br/>
removing the worst circles and replacing them with simple intersections <br/>
controlled by a traffic light!<br/>

BTW, on a recent trip to South Africa, I was amused by their name for traffic <br/>
lights.<br/>
