Cameroon to Take over 33 Lake Chad Villages
 From Mustapha Muhammad in Maiduguri
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In line with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgement over
Nigeria-Cameroon dispute, a total sovereignty over the 33 villages in
the Lake Chad area will from January 1, 2004 in effect revert back to
Cameroon.
Chairman of the Nigerian delegation to the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed
Commission, Prince Bola Ajibola, made the declaration in Maiduguri,
Wednesday during a visit to the Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu
Sheriff. Ajibola said that the parties decided to complete a total
withdrawal of administration, police and military establishments from
areas ceded to each country by ICJ judgment by December 2003.
Though, he said it was discovered that the demarcation within the Lake
Chad Basin had not been completed, particularly from pillar 5 to the
bifurcation of the Ebeji River, the need to complete this demarcation,
he said was however, brought to the notice of the Cameroon delegates.
"If and when this demarcation is accomplished, there will be need for
Cameroon to surrender the sovereignty that it has been exercising over
Danbore (East) village, to Nigeria. In other words, Cameroon will still
need to vacate its own administration in this area," he stressed.
Ajibola admitted that the prospect of conflict between the two
countries has been minimised following the establishment of the
Cameroon, Nigeria Mixed Commission adding that mutual understanding and
confidence developed between them had been re-established further.
He said the confidence-building initiative that evolved between both
countries, necessitated the building of bridges between the two peoples
through the rehabilitation of the
Kumba-Muntangene-Mamfe-Eyumojok-Ekok-Mfun-Ikom-Abakaliki road network
addin gthat the road network has been inspected in February 2003.
