I'm missing something here. The elevation at Badwater is -279.8'and
that's what the sign says or said the last time I was there anyway.
The lowest elevation in the basin is at two spots out in the salt
flats both of which measure -282'. It appears that your hole filled
up to the watertable level of the lowest points out in the flats. Is
that a reasonable assumption? The easiest natural -282' spot to
access is 1/2 mile out in the flats from the junction of route 178
and the Natural Bridge road at a compass heading of 216 deg. This
junction is 3.5 miles N of Badwater. The second -282'spot is 4 mi.
NW of Badwater way out in the flats. We opted to go to the nearer
one. For more info see "Backpacking Death Valley" by Chuck Gebhardt
published in 1985. It may still be available at the Visitor Center.
