university of delaware library

returned to white clay creek state park at dawn today for the
continuation of the m&d point of origin try
& soon found the correct path & indeed the post marked west itself
more or less exactly where predicted
& just as a buck bolted from hiding there

the original wooden post has been replaced by a dressed untapered
obeliskoid stone
date unknown but stylistically about 1870
maybe 10 inches square & 3 feet above ground
with a pyramidal cap so foreshortened that the apex was smooth rather
than pointy

the top of the west face is marked west
& commemorative inscriptions adorn the north & east faces
but the south face is mysteriously blank & deeply pocked
leaving me to guess that it may once have been fastened to the north
face of a similar if not the original wooden post also marked west
perhaps long since disintegrated or yanked

so thats about it for the 3 m&d preliminary points
but while i am here at udel
which is the veritable hub of delaware boundary pointing
i will also try to find the source documents to answer the questions
about the several different new castle arcs
as well as any other specifics anyone can remind me of while i am here
