Quite a few countries drove on the left in the past, including the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, Portugal and parts of Canada. In the case of
Portugal, this legacy can still be seen in Macau which stayed on the left
after the parent country switched.

I think African countries generally (but not always) follow the precedent
established during colonial times.
