I just thought to search for "Bethany" in THE HANDBOOK OF TEXAS ONLINE, a
prestigious encyclopedia of 23,000 scholarly articles on everything Texan (
www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ ).

In the article "Bethany, Texas (Panola County)," it is stated:

> One of the stores, bisected by the state line, was built in 1889 by a
barkeeper who wanted to take advantage of the differences in state laws; in half
of the store drinking was legal, in the other gambling was legal.
