This story is from the Port Huron (MI) Times-Herald of Monday, August
4. It's about a resident of Harsens Island MI who claims that, since
the island was never formally handed over to Great Britain by the
Indians following the French and Indian War, it's Indian land, not
part of the USA, and local township building ordinances are not law
there.

Walpole Island, across the St. Clair River in Canada, claims similar
status. It's a Canadian First Nations reserve, and the natives point
out that, since the island was never ceded to Canada, it's actually
an independent country. There's a big sign to that effect near the
main road leading from Wallaceburg through the reserve to the ferry
terminal.

Both places are geographically fascinating. Harsens Island is a half
hour's drive from Detroit's northern suburbs, but when you're on the
island, it seeme like you're a million miles from all the urban
clutter. Walpole Island is swampy and seems even more remote. You'd
never guess you were so close to such a large North American city.
