Hello All:

I spoke with a very nice fellow from the IBC this morning. He is the
guy leading the team that is doing maintenance along the CAUS line in
Point Roberts.

I will join them on Monday as they are mowing some of the areas around
markers, cleaning marker #1, and doing general maintenance. We're also
going to check out marker #0 as he's never seen it.

He told me some interesting things in the area:

-- There is at least one, if not more, off shore range markers that
show the borderline. These have long since been abandoned, yet they
still stand. On them there is a "bridge plaque" that shows the
borderline. There has been talk about visiting these courtesy of the
US Coast Guard.

-- There are some newer condos and houses towards the east side of the
Point that are within 2 feet of the border. I asked how this could be
when law dictates a nice wide vista. He said that the lots were so
small on the Canadian side that when the structures were built in the
70's they had special permission to come close to the border.

Elsewhere on the line:

He surveyed the line for the building of the joint customs building at
Little Gold Creek, YK - Poker Creek, AK

He mentioned that normally if a structure built directly on the border
(he mentioned some cabins in Quebec), then there must be windows on
each side, so that you can see the vista through the building. This
isn't the case in Little Gold Creek -- but they marked the outside and
inside of both exterior walls so that everyone can tell where the
border is.

Anyway... more stories and photos next week. I'll probably join them
later when they are on Zero Ave -- and in the fall when they are in the
mountains. I will try to do a piece for our national public radio
network (CBC) as well.

Have a good weekend, fellow borderfreaks!
