which reminds me
which reminds me
ever since craig arrived with dry bpn
aka the northernmost dry boundary point on earth
in message 8709
we have made precious little progress toward bringing home the
remaining cardinal extremity dry points
namely dry bpe & dry bpw & dry bps
to complete our global dry bp news tour
which tho so well begun is still nowheres near half done

the best progress i can claim to have made so far is with dry bpe
for i have at least definitely located it at one of 4 monuments all
somewhere in south central new guinea
at or very near elong 141d01m10s
& numbered respectively mm11 mm12 mm13 & mm14

these are all mapped as well as precisely geocoordinated in
http://www.vanuatu.usp.ac.fj/pactreaties/Treaties_etc/treaties_In
donesia_&_Australia1.html

the difficulty here tho is that until someone lays an industrial
strength gps on all 4 of these monuments
we wont know which of them is a few millimeters farther east
than the others
tho it is some consolation to at least know the longitude of dry
bpe down to the nearest second wherever it may lie

no pix of any of the 4 candidate monuments nor of any of the 14
probably identical monuments in this series have yet been found

turning next to dry bpw
which is in itself a fun thing to do
since it lies at almost the mirror image of the dry bpe longitude
this has been a real beguiler because it is right here on caus
& tho i have long had its location down to about a 10 foot square
at wlong 141d00m07s6 & nlat 60d18m22s9
& can identify it both as boundary point 187 & as the famous
turnpoint on a shoulder of mount saint elias where the long
meridional caus line begins its peak to peak zigzag down the
alaska panhandle
i dont even know if it is monumented

in fact i rather doubt it is marked at all
strange tho it feels to imagine a completely naked turnpoint
because many of its serial mates have expressly been assigned
monument numbers by the ibc rather than simply boundary point
numbers such as this point & some others have
according to
http://www.internationalboundarycommission.org/coordinates/S
ECT-P-83.txt
&
http://www.internationalboundarycommission.org/coordinates/S
ECT-Q-83.txt

& tho picture archives show many of the key monuments on the
alaska border
none is ever mentioned as existing at this most critical position

pix of mount saint elias also abound
but none in which this turnpoint or any part of the border can be
discerned

i did just find several interesting pages tho about this peculiar
peak to peak caus line dating back to 1825 when it was still gbru
beginning at
http://www.explorenorth.com/library/weekly/aa103000a.htm

& turning finally to dry bps
which is nowheres near a mirror image of the dry bpn latitude
being a whopping 15 degrees less extreme than it
this point is easily identifiable as being where the argentina chile
meridional border meets the beagle channel on tierra del fuego
but i have found no word of where the terminal monument lies
& no pic yet of any arcl monument anywhere for that matter
nor any pic yet either of the otherwise much photographed
channel showing the place where the border strikes it

a most mysterious & intriguing complete absence of data

so all in all it is hard to say which of these 3 tries has been most
elusive so far
