TIBR and Horton Hill
Lowell G. McManus

These pages document a visit to the Timber Rock Railroad in Deep East Texas on October 15, 2002. The TIBR owns the ex-BNSF branch from Kirbyville, Texas, eastward to De Ridder, Louisiana, and it leases the BNSF line from Kirbyville northward to Tenaha, Texas. The photos were taken at Kirbyville and on Horton Hill.

I arrived in Kirbyville at noon on a beautiful fall day to find this train starting to move. This GP30 is WAMX 3022 in Kansas & Oklahoma livery. TIBR uses leased motive power exculsively.
The train's second and third units were FURX 1162 and 1178, ex-Tex Mex GP40-3's still in the KCS family livery and retaining their Tex Mex numbers. Other leased units in Kirbyville but not well located for photography were WATX 2209, and WAMX 1803, 7005, and 7021.
The train departs for De Ridder, Louisiana. It will turn east onto the De Ridder line at J&E Junction on the north side of Kirbyville. The Kirbyville yard is on the east edge of downtown and is easily viewed from public streets on both sides.
This northbound train is switching back and forth across Farm Road 363 on the north side of Kirbyville. Power is BNSF SD40-2's 7858, 6926, and 7329, all in use this day by TIBR. We will see this train again on Horton Hill.
